I found this little cartoon from Everyday People funny. Not lol funny, but ironic funny.
It reminded me of the last time I attended PPD group at Spectrum Healthier Communities a few weeks ago.
There were lots of newbies there. First-timers to the group as well as two pregnant girls looking to build support before having their babies.
I think we* scared them. (*’we’ referring to those of us who were the veteran PPD’ers at the group that evening)
I can’t imagine coming to our group and listening to what “might happen to you if you struggle like we did after giving birth.”
At the same time, I applaud them for facing and bracing themselves and their spouses or support persons for what reality might look like postpartum.
In group, we often lament the fact that “we had no idea” and have to go through an anger phase of, “how come no one told me things could be like this?”
It’s that deep-seeded pain and anger right there that drives each and every one of us who has suffered, diagnosed or not, to speak up and make sure no one else has to go it alone on the bumpy postpartum path we have stumbled, struggled, crawled, clawed, and sometimes had to ask for help traveling down.
